Senator Abubakar Kyari

Abubakar Kyari CON, born on January 15, 1963, is a Nigerian politician currently serving as the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security. He represented Borno North Senatorial District in the Senate from 2015 until his resignation in April 2022 to become the APC Deputy National Chairman, North. Kyari briefly acted as the APC national chairman in 2023 before being appointed minister by President Bola Tinubu on August 16, 2023. Educated in Nigeria and the U.S., he holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Martin, and an MBA from Webster University, St. Louis. He was honored with the Commander Of The Order Of The Niger (CON) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

 

Achievements

Increased Agricultural Productivity

Key Achievements:

  • Procured 6,000 improved oil palm tenera sprouted nuts (DXP Variety) for plantation development in the oil palm producing States.
  • Procured 5,000 hybrid tenera seedlings for plantation development in the oil palm producing States
  • 9 MT of certified millet seeds were distributed freely to 100 millet farmers through (Sorghum/Millet Association of Nigeria (SMAN) and National Association of Millet Producers Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NAMPPAM) for 2024 planting season.
  • 4,229 Rice farmers received 25Kg each of improved Rice seed.
  • Cultivated 1,000 Ha of millet within 3 months as well as increase millet production and  create jobs.

Agricultural Financing for Increased Food Production:

Key Achievements

    • Low-cost loans were disbursed to 14,181 individuals and SMEs engaged in agricultural value chain activities.

Increased Agricultural Production and Farmers Livelihood

Key Achievements

  • 1,554,961 bags of assorted fertilizers distributed, reaching over 777,480 smallholder farmers natiowide, with each farmer receiving an average of 2 bags in conjunction with Central Bank of Nigeria
  • 165,805 bags of NPK and Urea fertilizers supplied for distribution, reaching over 82,902 smallholder farmers across 5 States, with each farmer receiving an average of 2 bags

Provision of Modern Agricultural Machinery

Key Achievement

    • Supply of 1 No. of 75hp Messt Ferguson Tractor 1+3 Disc Plough 1+4 Disc Ridger 1+ 16 Disc Harrow 1 Unit Tipping Trailer to Gwale Federal Constituency of Kano State

  • 156,439 Number of Farmers Insured

Proper Functioning and Use of Facilities

  • Increased National Storage capacity by 25,000MT in the South-South Geopolitical Zone
